MARYS for May #1

The Virgin, Joseph Stella, 1926, the Brooklyn Museum

Joseph Stella, best known for his cubist versions of the Brooklyn Bridge, presents Mary as an icon of vitality and variety, of new life in abundance. He captures in paint what G.M. Hopkins expressed in his poem, The May Magnificat:
All things rising, all things sizing
Mary sees, sympathizing
With that world of good,
Nature's motherhood.

Their magnifying of each its kind
With delight calls to mind
How she did in her stored
Magnify the Lord.
